For more than four decades, Corrie Kastubi has dedicated her life to celebrating Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage through fashion. Recognized as one of the country’s most respected designers, she has built a remarkable career by transforming traditional Indonesian textiles into contemporary works of wearable art while remaining deeply committed to sustainability, craftsmanship, and cultural preservation.
Since beginning her professional journey in 1979, Corrie has championed the beauty of Indonesian wastra—including Batik, Songket, Tenun, and many other traditional textiles that reflect the diversity of the Indonesian archipelago. Educated at the Lucie Clayton School of Dressmaking in London, she combines international design expertise with a profound respect for Indonesia’s centuries-old textile traditions.
At the heart of her creative philosophy is “Heritage to Now,” a concept that demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship can remain relevant in the modern world. Rather than treating heritage as something to preserve only in museums, Corrie transforms it into elegant contemporary fashion that speaks to new generations while honoring the artisans who keep these traditions alive.
One of the defining characteristics of her work is her commitment to zero-waste design. By carefully preserving the integrity of handcrafted fabrics and minimizing unnecessary cutting, she creates garments that respect both the artistry of the textile and the environment. Every collection reflects the belief that luxury fashion and sustainability should go hand in hand.
Corrie’s vision extends far beyond the runway. Through her Sustainable Fashion Map, she actively promotes the use of Indonesian natural fibers (Serat Alam) and natural dyes (Pewarna Alam) sourced responsibly from communities across Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua. Her work highlights not only the beauty of Indonesia’s natural resources but also the importance of supporting local artisans, preserving traditional knowledge, and strengthening sustainable livelihoods.
Her influence on Indonesia’s fashion industry reaches well beyond her collections. As a Co-Founder of the Indonesian Fashion Designers Association (APPMI) and a former member of IPMI, Corrie has helped shape the country’s fashion landscape while mentoring designers and promoting Indonesian craftsmanship on both national and international stages.
Throughout her career, she has remained actively involved with organizations dedicated to cultural preservation, women’s empowerment, sustainable textiles, and community development. Her collaborations with the Indonesian Fiber Council (Dewan Serat Indonesia) and her participation in initiatives such as “From Farm to Fashion” continue to demonstrate her commitment to building a more sustainable future for the fashion industry.
Corrie Kastubi’s work represents more than beautiful garments—it tells the story of Indonesia. Every textile, every handwoven fabric, and every carefully crafted silhouette reflects the nation’s extraordinary cultural diversity and the enduring skills of its artisans. By combining heritage with innovation, she has become an ambassador for Indonesian fashion and an inspiration to designers who believe that creativity can preserve culture while protecting the planet.
Her journey is a testament to the idea that fashion is more than style—it is identity, heritage, responsibility, and a bridge between generations. Through her lifelong dedication, Corrie Kastubi continues to prove that Indonesia’s textile traditions are not simply part of its history—they are an essential part of its future.
