 Zambia – Fashion Designer, Catwalk Coach, and Creative Visionary

Mickley Banda is one of Zambia’s most influential fashion figures—a pioneering fashion designer, catwalk coach, writer, filmmaker, and creative director whose work has helped shape the country’s modeling and fashion industry for more than two decades. Recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Zambia, Banda is widely regarded as a driving force behind the professionalization of catwalk culture and fashion training in the region.

Originally pursuing studies in law, Banda made a decisive shift toward the creative arts, enrolling at Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka, where he earned a Diploma in Fashion Design (2001–2003). This decision marked the beginning of a groundbreaking career that would redefine fashion presentation, model training, and creative education in Zambia.

Early international recognition came when he designed a USD 10,000 couture gown for the finals of the continental beauty competition Face of Africa at Sun City, presented alongside globally recognized brands such as Swarovski, Abraham Pelham, and AngloGold. This milestone opened the door to invitations from major fashion platforms including Cape Town Fashion Week, Mozambique Fashion Week, Fashion Business Angola, and later international World Fashion Week events, as well as charity showcases such as the Canine Fundraising Fashion Show in New Hampton.

Throughout his career, Mickley Banda has dressed high-profile public figures, including national bank governors, musicians, actors, and cultural personalities. He has also designed costumes and stage aesthetics for acclaimed theatrical productions such as Chiti Muluba. Among his notable international collaborations, Banda dressed Jenna Bush for the Elephantasia campaign, supporting the conservation of African elephants.

Beyond design, Banda is widely recognized as the pioneer who introduced professional catwalk training in Zambia, at a time when fashion presentation was largely confined to beauty pageants. Through his coaching and mentorship, he has trained approximately 90% of Zambia’s leading models, many of whom have gone on to achieve international recognition. Among them:

• Patience Mwanza, who modeled for designer Michael Costello
• Chai Fundanga, who appeared during Paris Fashion Week
• Christine Sakala, who walked in Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks
• Lukundo Nalungwe, winner of the continental competition Face of Africa
   

In addition to individual mentorship, Banda has contributed extensively to the development of modeling agencies, theater productions, pageants, and creative training programs across Zambia, helping to build the foundations of the country’s modern fashion industry.

Continuing to expand his creative vision, Banda is currently developing new storytelling platforms including the reality television project “Myth Mickley: The Creator” and the feature film “Soul Trader (Vendeur d’Âmes)”, exploring the intersection of fashion, cinema, and cultural narrative.

Through decades of innovation, mentorship, and cultural leadership, Mickley Banda remains a defining figure in Zambia’s creative landscape—bridging fashion, performance, and storytelling while inspiring new generations of African designers and models.
