Elevating Lao Identity onto the International Stage
Thoulany Chanthalangsy, a fashion designer from Laos and founder of Kinnaly Design, represents a new generation of creators bringing the cultural identity of his country to the international fashion scene.
Based in Pakse, Champasack Province, southern Laos, Thoulany began his fashion journey in 2013, when he established Kinnaly Design.
The brand’s name was inspired by his daughter. In 2020, Kinnaly Design expanded its presence with a second location in Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
Tradition Meets Contemporary Design
Thoulany’s work is defined by a distinctive balance between the rich textile heritage of Laos and contemporary fashion design.
His collections incorporate traditional Lao fabrics and craftsmanship, reinterpreting them through modern silhouettes, sophisticated tailoring and an elegant contemporary aesthetic.
Rather than simply preserving tradition, Thoulany seeks to give it a new expression, demonstrating how cultural heritage can evolve while remaining connected to its roots.
His creative inspiration is deeply connected to the cultural heritage of Laos, particularly the Champasack region, home to landmarks such as Wat Phou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the spectacular Khone Phapheng Falls.
Kinnaly Design
Kinnaly Design has become a recognized name within the Lao fashion scene, particularly in the local high-end market.
The brand works with handwoven textiles and traditional weaving techniques, combining the authenticity of Lao craftsmanship with modern fashion production.
Under Thoulany’s creative direction, Kinnaly Design has developed an identity that celebrates Lao heritage while presenting it in a refined and contemporary way.
The result is fashion that feels distinctly Lao, yet speaks to an increasingly international audience.
Laos on the International Runway
Thoulany Chanthalangsy has brought this vision beyond Laos, representing his country on the international fashion stage through the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase (AFDS).
His participation in the JF3 Fashion Festival in Jakarta presented Lao fashion through a contemporary lens, highlighting the beauty of traditional textiles, patterns and craftsmanship.
His collection, presented under the concept “Elevating Lao Identity onto the International Stage,” demonstrated how Lao cultural heritage can be transformed into sophisticated contemporary fashion.
The presentation formed part of Elysian Currents: A Southeast Asian Fantasy in Couture, alongside designers representing other countries from the region.
A New Expression of Lao Fashion
