Isabella Springmühl Tejada is a pioneering Guatemalan fashion designer whose work embodies resilience, cultural pride, and inclusive creativity. Born in Guatemala City in 1997, she is internationally recognized as one of the first professional fashion designers with Down syndrome, redefining the boundaries of the global fashion industry.
From an early age, Isabella demonstrated a natural talent for design, inspired by her grandmother, a skilled designer, and by the rich textile heritage of Guatemala. Despite being rejected from traditional fashion schools due to her condition, she persevered—transforming adversity into purpose and forging her own path in fashion.
She is the founder of the brand Down to Xjabelle, a label rooted in sustainability, inclusion, and cultural identity. Her collections are distinguished by the use of authentic, recycled Guatemalan textiles, vibrant colors, and intricate hand-embroidered details created in collaboration with local artisans. Through her work, Isabella not only preserves ancestral craftsmanship but also promotes fair recognition of indigenous communities.
In 2016, Isabella made history by showcasing her designs at the International Fashion Showcase during London Fashion Week, gaining global recognition. That same year, she was named one of the BBC’s 100 Women, honoring her impact as a designer and advocate for diversity.
Beyond fashion, Isabella is a powerful voice for inclusion. Her mission is to challenge stereotypes and demonstrate that creativity has no limitations. Through every collection, she celebrates individuality, empowers marginalized communities, and shares the vibrant spirit of Guatemala with the world.
At the World Fashion Exhibition, Isabella Springmühl Tejada proudly represents Guatemala—bringing a message of hope, inclusion, and cultural beauty to the global stage.
