For more than two decades, María Lafuente has developed a distinctive creative language within Spanish fashion, bringing together art, culture, nature, innovation and sustainability as integral parts of the same creative process.
Since her debut at Madrid’s Cibeles runway in 2006, the designer has created more than 40 collections, establishing an identity in which fashion becomes both an artistic form of expression and a vehicle for raising awareness.
Nature occupies a central place in María Lafuente’s creative universe. Her collections are inspired by natural cycles, transformation and the relationship between matter, movement and light.
Architecture, poetry, music and tradition enter into dialogue with her designs, creating garments that combine lightness, structure and movement, while seeking a balance between aesthetics, functionality and responsibility.
Material research is one of the most distinctive features of Lafuente’s career.
Throughout the years, she has experimented with unconventional materials, including potato starch, carbon fibre, recycled tyres, glass and a variety of sustainable fibres.
One of the milestones of her career was the creation of a collection using sustainable PEFC-certified fabrics, reinforcing her commitment to a fashion industry based on more responsible models of production and consumption.
For María Lafuente, sustainability is also a way of preserving knowledge and traditions.
Her projects bring together collaborations with artisans, scientists, innovation centres and communities connected to the land. Technological research therefore coexists with traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations.
This philosophy allows each collection to become more than a series of garments: a meeting point between knowledge, culture and creativity.
From Madrid to international fashion and cultural platforms, María Lafuente’s work has travelled across Europe, America and Asia.
Her international career has taken her work to cities including Paris, London, New York, Miami, São Paulo, Moscow, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur and Montevideo, among others. She has also maintained a continuous presence at Madrid Fashion Week since 2006.
María Lafuente’s work extends beyond the traditional fashion runway into costume design, corporate identity and cultural projects.
She has developed projects for institutions and companies, as well as working in film, television, performing arts and sports-related projects. Her multidisciplinary approach reinforces a vision of fashion that goes beyond the garment to encompass an entire visual and conceptual universe.
In 2026, coinciding with twenty years of her presence at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, María Lafuente presents AURA MANIFESTO, a collection that revisits her creative archive while opening a new chapter of aesthetic, material and sensory exploration.
The butterfly becomes the central symbol of the collection, representing metamorphosis and transformation. The silhouettes envelop the body like an aura, exploring the relationship between transparency and density, structure and fluidity, matter and light.
AURA MANIFESTO incorporates innovative materials such as Musapiel, a biomaterial developed from banana plant fibres in the Canary Islands, alongside cotton, tulle, lace and PEFC-certified Tencel.
The collection also features Añino, a merino wool developed from an indigenous sheep breed under animal-welfare principles and offering waterproof and breathable qualities.
Craftsmanship also plays a prominent role through collaborations with Elena Larrén in jewellery, Las Arte-sanas de Madrid in crochet and Nana Golmar in millinery.
For María Lafuente, creating fashion means establishing connections: between past and future, technology and craftsmanship, the individual and nature.
Her work demonstrates that innovation can coexist with tradition and that sustainability can become a creative force, rather than simply an obligation imposed on the industry.
Her universe is therefore built around a fundamental idea: fashion can be beautiful, experimental and contemporary while remaining conscious of the world around it.
Art. Nature. Innovation. Sustainability.
Four concepts that define a career in constant transformation and make María Lafuente one of the Spanish designers who have placed research and environmental responsibility at the heart of their creative language.
